The girl modeled for the unknown artist in a family estate in 1825. At this time, the artist created several family images in one style at once, including a portrait of Ekaterina’s brother Vasily Obrezkov. The picture is now exhibited in the Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad.

In the 19th century, artists began to make portraits of children more often. This was due to changes in the relations between children and parents: the harsh customs of the 18th century had sunk into history, and people ceased to treat children only as future adults. The atmosphere in families changed, and now childhood was perceived as a wonderful stage in the life of every person. Therefore, parents sought to capture the carefree days on canvas, and often ordered portraits of their children.
The portrait from the Radishchev Museum depicts Ekaterina when she was about three to four years old. She stands on her toes near the stone pedestal and reaches out to the flowers in the vase. The girl is depicted against the background of a dark brown drapery that covers the view of the manor park.
The environment is typical of the ceremonial portrait genre, with the landscape behind the model’s back, full-length image, a stone column and drapery. These details form a monumental and static background, which is opposed by the sentimental, romantic intonations. The girl is dressed in transparent pink and white clothes made of satin and lace. Her outfit emphasizes the lightness and airiness of the image.
Sentimentalism was a popular artistic movement of the time. Artists of this style believed that feelings were more important than intelligence, and often poeticized the material world. The style is characterized by particular focus on the landscape, interior details and everyday life. In the Saratov portrait, the artist combined the childish, heartwarming image of Ekaterina and the features of a strict ceremonial portrait.
