The artist Alexey Bogolyubov initiated the creation of the museum. He gave the museum the name of his grandfather, Alexander Nikolaevich Radishchev, the famous Russian writer, poet and philosopher, and donated his own collection of paintings.
The Radishchev Art Museum is one of the oldest public museums in Russia. It was opened a year before the Tretyakov Gallery.
The museum’s collection contains more than 35,000 works of Russian and European art. Among them are the works of Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Korovin, Valentin Serov, Isaac Levitan, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, as well as more than 1,500 paintings and drawings by the founder Alexey Bogolyubov.
