Pyaling tower complex is depicted on the painting created by Alikhan Mayriev. This ancient architectural tower complex is located in the Dzheyrakhsky District at an altitude of about 1,700 m above sea level. Presently, four battle towers and more than ten residential and semi-combat buildings have been preserved here.

The history of the Ingush military and residential towers is closely related to the concept of ‘teip’ which means ‘a clan’ in Ingush. Each large teip had its tower or a tower complex. It is believed that Pyaling belonged to the teips of the Evloevs and Polonkoevs.

Byatr from the Barkinkhoevs clan, a great two meters tall architect, who like a giant was incredibly strong, was commissioned by the Evloyevs to build the towers in Ph’aling in the 16th century. The Barkinkhoevs were highly skilled hereditary master builders.

Alikhan Mayriev depicted the ancestral towers against the background of a majestic mountain panorama. He painted with well-defined brush strokes. He painted the sky with smooth and broad brush strokes, while the mountains and towers were depicted with shorter ones. These techniques in a way relate the painting to the Impressionists, who also painted thickly, used quick frequent brush strokes and paid special attention to the play of light and the trembling of air at a particular moment of the day.

To convey the cold mountain air, the artist used clean but softened colors. This added peace and spiritual harmony to the painting.

The artist focused on the aerial perspective: he depicted the towers in contrast to the background, with well-defined edges, while the mountains in the distance look blurred and slightly bluish. A light fog swirls below; a soft cloud is noticeable above.

In nature, the effect of aerial perspective occurs because the atmosphere always contains countless dust particles and the smallest suspension of water droplets. From a close distance, they are indistinguishable, but the further the object is, the greater the thickness of the air between it and the observer is. In this thickness, objects seem to be shrouded in a light haze. Experienced artists know that the farthest background in landscapes should be painted softer, blurred, in colder bluish tones — this is how the effect of the depth of space appears.
