Maxim Vorobjev painted Bridge Ammirale in Palermo following his trip to Italy. The bridge Ponte Ammiraglio over the Oreto was built by Admiral George of Antioch around the year 1113.
Over the centuries the river changed its course and already at the times of Vorobjev the bridge stood just on the meadow. One managed to identify the place depicted on the canvas by the drawing of Vorobjev Bridge Ammirale in Palermo. Now it is kept with the State Tretyakov Gallery.
Vorobjev portrayed the Sicilian landscape in romantic manner. Before nature was of minor importance in painting, it was given a role of background. The classic artists painted it with detailed accuracy while the objects were accommodated according to stringent cannons of the style. Vorobjev made nature the principal subject and introduced his own experiences into his painting. He employed the warm tints of yellow, brown and orange. Using them, he conveyed nostalgic recollections about Italy.

There were no canons for depicting nature in romantic landscape. Artists built composition at their own discretion. Thus to demonstrate the perspective in his canvas Vorobjev used the play of light. The shadow from the ledge in the right part of the painting segregated the foreground from the background.

Maxim Vorobjev has been refining his style for many years. He enrolled in the Academy of Arts at the age of 10. There he demonstrated bright results from the very start. Architectural painting сame natural to him. In 1809 the pioneer of the Russian urbanscape Fedor Alexeev hired Vorobjev as his assistant. Together they painted the views of cities in the genre of veduta, i.e. depicted a routine urban landscape in detail.
In 1820 by decree of Prince Nicholas Pavlovich, the future Emperor Nicholas I, the artist travelled to Palestine. Here he made a drawing of all main places revered by Christians. However, the artist went beyond the architecture: he painted water-colored landscapes that, at a later time, presented a material for future paintings. In his paintings accurate architectural views intertwined with romantic landscapes.

Vorobjev gained a life pension for this work. Following his trip he continued to paint at the request of the Emperor and other royal persons. In 1828 the artist accompanied the Emperor during the Russian-Turkish war. By decree of Nicholas I he made drawings of the cities where he stayed. By the end of life the artist primarily painted the Italian landscapes. These canvasses were not a success, thus following the death of Vorobjev a whole gallery of paintings was left in his house.
