Alexei Tkachyov
A Field in Molotino
#3
Alexei completed his painting ‘A Field in Molotino’ in 2006. In it, he depicts an autumnal rural scene from memories he had about his homeland. In the foreground, the artist has captured a field of winter crops.

These are crops that can survive through the winter, in order to continue growing in the spring and be harvested by the summer. The crops are half-covered by snow, and three horses and a calf are quietly grazing in the field. The middle ground is dominated by a large haystack, covered with birds. In the background, a small yellow copse is visible.

Alexei Tkachyov has managed to accurately convey the natural colors of late autumn in the central Russian region. Dense white clouds hang in the bluish-gray sky. The bright greenery lies next to soft blue tints in the snow. The ochre-colored copse and haystack add to the sense of the landscape’s richness.

The village of Molotino is within the Bryansk region, where Alexei Tkachyov was born and grew up. The artist’s grandfather, Afanasii Vasilievich, lived in this village.

‘ the village was large, with many families, and many of the families had eight to ten children. The village was surrounded by scores of oaks, birches and boundless fields, which had once been a landed estate. The pinnacle of happiness was the time that our older brother, Seraphim, took us out into the night there. We went to Lugovatitsya (a lowland area), where horses and cows with their calves were grazing. Us children sat around a fire, frying pieces of fat we had stuck onto the end of sharpened sticks.’

This work inscribes itself into the Russian tradition of a ‘mood landscape’. One of the pioneers of this genre is Isaac Levitan, who was one of the first to portray his emotions through the state of the natural world in his paintings.

‘ The landscape doesn’t have any purpose if it is just beautiful. Rather, it should express the history of the soul. ’

Konstantin Korovin

From his youth, Alexei Tkachyov has always chosen complex states of the natural world to depict in his painting: daybreak, overcast conditions and dusk. He captured the barely noticeable nuances of the scenic relationships within autumnal motifs. His landscapes are often full of lyrical reflection.

The village of Molotino exists to this day. It is situated around 30 kilometers to the west of Bryansk, not far from the Tyutchev’s Ovstug estate. Settlements there were first known as ‘Molvotino’ in the 15th Century.

The current name was established in the middle of the 18th Century.
