In the showcase you can see a model of steamship Donets assembled by model maker Fedor Yadovin. For her time, Donets is a typical cargo ship with Christiansen Meyer steam engine. Developed by Finnish shipbuilders, design of the Khasan series comprising the ships of this type, was turned into reality by Finnish shipyard Crichton-Vulcan in the city of Turku. Ships of this series were built at the yard’s wharf from 1945 to 1956, and 26 of those ships were delivered to the Soviet Union. They were three-island single-deckers with heavy icebreaking bow and cruiser stern with engine capacity of 1000 horse power and speed about 10 knots.
Dry cargo ships constitute the better part of merchant fleet, nearly 60% of total number of vessels. Equipment of this type of vessels includes cranes and booms for loading-unloading operations, the cargo is stored on decks and in holds. All these elements you can see in the model in minute detail.
The construction of Donets was completed in a matter of three months: started in January, and in April she was already launched. Her length is 89,95 meters, breadth - 13,06 meters, and hull height - 6,5 meters. She represented the class of specialized dry cargo ships for transportation of homogeneous cargoes, which were called in accordance with the kind of cargo they were intended for: container carrier, bulker, reefer, RO/RO ship. Donets was a timber carrier with the task of transporting timber and sawn wood. Like all sea timber carriers, she had strengthened ice strake making it possible to call at arctic ports without restraints.
Apart from living superstructure where her crew of 30 people lived, the dry cargo carrier had 2 cargo holds of 3760 and 3960 cubic meter capacity. The vessel was loaded by dint of eight cargo derricks, 3-ton lifting capacity each.
Please pay attention to heavy and wide beam of the ship: it goes upon the ice, crushes it and then crawls over the ice again and breaks it, and does it over and over again during her stay amidst the ice.
The type of Donets is called cruiser stern, it has partly submerged counter improving the ship streamlining and performance of propeller-rudder system. In the design of her counter, provisions are made for both standard transverse ribs and cants.
For a quarter of the century from 1956 through 1980, Donets hailed from the port of Arkhangelsk and formed a part of the Northern Steamship Company. The dry cargo carrier was decommissioned with call sign UOSE in 1981.
