Especially for the exhibition A Thousand Years of Northern Navigation, pavilions are built resembling elements of a sailboat by shape. Original accent lighting of glass displays make them look like icebergs glittering in the sun. The atmosphere of an Arctic voyage is enhanced with acoustic effects: wash of the waves and calls of the seagulls.
The exhibition visitors acquaint themselves with the everyday life of Pomors who sailed to Grumant (Spitsbergen) and Matka (Novaya Zemlya) long before the Peter I epoch. High emphasis is placed on the Arkhangelsk Admiralty history (Solombala Wharf), which was one of the Russia’s naval shipbuilding centers in 18th — 19th centuries, Old sketches, maps depicting the routes of expeditions, nautical instruments, miniatures of vessels, portraits of naval commanders and Arctic explorers, paintings of marine artists are among the exhibits.
Much of the exposition deals with events and achievements of the Soviet era: polar heroes, Great Patriotic War convoys, transportation of heavy cargoes in the most difficult environment above the Arctic Circle. The exhibition shows the continuity of generations in the North exploration and forms in our contemporary the sense of belonging to glorious deeds of our forefathers.
