The painting depicts the artist’s son, Sergei Makovsky (1877—1962), later known as an art historian, art critic, poet, memoirist, publisher, editor, and organiser of art exhibitions.
K. E. Makovsky accumulated a vast collection with some of the items featured in his works. Little Sergey, the future art historian, was fascinated by the beautiful objects from his father’s collection and enjoyed holding them in his hands. As he later recalled, there were ancient objects and even weapons everywhere in the workshop. That is why his father called the picture ‘Little antiquarian’.
