In the exposition of the museum you can see a model of the DE-210 rotary snowblower - this machine is remembered by many generations of local residents. It takes pride of place at all exhibitions dedicated to the post-war history of the city. Severodvinsk was positioned as a city of machine builders, and it was the snowblower that was its symbol for several decades. Although both ships and nuclear-powered submarines, including the largest in the world, were built at city plants.
The Severodvinsk Road Machine Plant became an enterprise that personified the entire industry of the city. On May 25, 1939, Sevdormash began its history when in Molotovsk (as Severodvinsk was then called) a plant for the repair of equipment - RMZ - was formed. During the war years, the repair and mechanical plant was renamed into Special Plant No. 3. The enterprise mastered the production of mines of various calibers. After the war, the plant began to produce consumer goods: cast-iron pans, irons, iron beds, as well as furnace casting and sewer manhole covers were produced here. In the 1950s, the enterprise was reconstructed: in the spring of 1959, the first snowblower was produced, which drove in a column of the enterprise at the May Day demonstration. Soon the plant was named ‘Severodvinsk Road Machinery Plant’.
For more than forty years Sevdormash has been producing snow removal equipment. It was used throughout the Soviet Union and was delivered to Eastern Europe. And the countries of Africa, Iran and Turkey bought our snowblowers for cleaning sand. Of the dozens of models of snowplowing equipment produced by Sevdormash, the DE-210 auger snowblower stood out. The Ministry of Defense purchased these machines to clear snow from airfields and highways. From the 1970s to the present day, the DE-210 snowblower has been a feature of city streets in winter.
In 1992 ‘Sevdormash’ was incorporated, changed its owner many times, and in 2008 all work on it was stopped and the oldest enterprise in the city went bankrupt. The townspeople and museum expositions keep its memory.
