The extraordinary picturesque nature of Tarusa has long been a center of attraction for cultural and artistic figures such as Vasily Polenov, Vasily Vatagin, Viktor Borisov-Musatov, Konstantin Paustovsky, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Bulat Okudzhava.
Moscow artist Mikhail Sukharev (born 1960) also was not left indifferent to the lyrical beauty of the local landscapes. He was student of the Honored Artist of Russia Vladimir Korkodym, and a graduate of the Faculty of Art and Graphics of the Moscow State Pedagogical University and the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He is a teacher with PhD in Pedagogy and member of the Union of Artists. He has also authored works on 20th century Italian and German art, and contemporary art.
Sukharev has participated in numerous all-Russian and international exhibitions. The artist fruitfully works in various genres of easel painting and graphics, and creates book illustrations. His numerous works, including watercolors and drawings, are kept in the Russian Academy of Arts, in the Museum of the History of Moscow, and in numerous private collections in Russia and abroad.
The painting ‘The Summer. Tarusa’ from the collection of the Tarusa Art Gallery depicts a warm, sunny summer day. The format of the composition is close to a square, which gives a feeling of serene calm and stability. The dynamic is brought in by the image of the river bends that take the viewer deep into space. Each bend, bounded by the sandy shore, has its own color scheme, which becomes almost azure as you move away.
The artist masterfully conveys the reflection of the sandy shore, trees and hanging clouds on the surface of the river with textured strokes. He manages to reflect the diversity of the natural Oka vegetation by playing with several shades of green to create volume. The slightly bent trees and slowly floating clouds driven by a light breeze of summer wind are accurately reproduced. In the background, flat strips of fields and forests can be seen, evoking the feeling of the Russian landscape’s vastness.
