Lenin at the Marsovo Pole

Reichet painted this picture in wide dense strokes which gave the canvas dynamism, and made the figures look voluminous and textured. The color scheme is austere and laconic, with shades of gray and brown black prevailing. Due to such unity of color, the people in the picture do not look like a disparate crowd, but a close-knit mass. The red banners carried by the demonstrators look as bright spots on the general background.

Viktor Reichet depicted the leader of the Bolsheviks in the foreground. The dark clothes make the figure look like a part of the crowd; however, the artist highlighted it with several unobtrusive color accents. Behind the shoulder of the main character, the artist depicted a man in light clothes, and next to him, a fair-haired boy. Vladimir Lenin has a red ribbon pinned onto his coat. Despite its muted shade, the ribbon echoes with the banners. Lenin’s face is delineated more clearly and in detail than the faces of other people in the picture.

Viktor Reichet decided to become an artist after World War II, when he returned from the front. He was 23 years old back then. Reichet entered the Repin Institute, and in the 1960’s to 1980’s he created a whole series of works devoted to military topics: To the Partisans, The Farewell, Soldiers, etc. It was these paintings that made the artist famous.

Landscapes occupied a special place Reichet’s artwork. The artist adhered to the traditions of the Leningrad landscape school: he chose a restrained color scheme and laconic forms, and tried to convey on the canvas the characteristic features of the media he chose. He brought sketches from his journeys across Russia, Germany and France. In 1989 to 1992, Victor Reichet’s works were presented at L’Ecole de Leningrad auctions of Russian painting.
