The artist Julius von Klever worked on this painting with great enthusiasm. He loved fairy tales and created them himself for his children. For his daughter Maria, he painted a picture basing on the plot of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault, because the girl loved fairy tales of that writer. And this is not surprising: we can only assume how many children from the end of the 17th century to the present day have listened, with a sinking heart, to stories about the wonderful adventures of his fairy-tale characters.

Little Red Riding Hood is a version of the picture Backwoods. The figure of the girl was painted by the artist Aleksandr Nikanorovich Novoskoltsev (1853—1919), with whom Klever had friendly relations. Novoskoltsev delicately and organically input the figure of Little Red Riding Hood into the majestic and mysterious forest in Klever’s picture.
The success of Little Red Riding Hood was consummate — the painting marked the beginning of Klever’s foreign fame and was reproduced many times.
