In September 2015, presidential elections were held in Tatarstan. There were four candidates in the ballot — Head of the Local Branch of the ‘Spravedlivaya Rossiya’ Party Rushaniya Bilgildeeva, Secretary of the Tatarstan Regional Branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Head of the Communist Fraction in the State Council of Tatarstan Khafiz Mirgalimov, Deputy of the Tatarstan State Council from the Liberal Democratic Party Ruslan Yusupov and Rustam Minnikhanov. 2,447,629 voters came to the polling stations.
Minnikhanov won 94.40% of votes and became the Head of the Republic for the second time. On September 18, 2015, the inauguration ceremony took place in Kazan. It was held at the State Big Concert Hall named in honour of Salikh Saidashev at Svobody square. The collection of The Museum of the History of Tatar Statehood and the Republic of Tatarstan contains the Constitution on which the newly elected president took the oath.
It was the sixth Inauguration Ceremony in the history of Tatarstan. Before that, it took place in March 2010. Then the State Council approved Minnikhanov, who had previously served as the Prime Minister of the Republic. The 2015 ceremony was special for Tatarstan — for the first time in 14 years, a President elected by the region’s residents took office.
The event was attended by 700 guests: high-ranking officials, cultural figures and journalists. They congratulated the new President on taking office and noted the importance of this event for Tatarstan. Chairman of the State Council of the Republic Farid Mukhametshin said: “For the first time in 15 years, direct presidential elections have been held in Tatarstan. For the first five years, under the leadership of Minnikhanov Tatarstan has achieved great success. The election of Minnikhanov has been enthusiastically met by the entire seven-million Tatar people”.
Mintimer Shaimiev congratulated Minnikhanov from the rostrum: “Despite the difficult situation in the country, the elections were held with enthusiasm. Minnikhanov”s first term can be called the breakthrough period of Tatarstan. In five years, we, the Tatarstan people, will celebrate a historic event — the centenary of formation of Tatarstan and its Statehood. We, the multinational people of the Tatarstan, who have popularly elected our President for the next term, are confident that we will adequately celebrate the centenary of Tatarstan, with you, Rustam Nurgalievich, — our President”.
