The sculptural composition ‘Ivan with a Firebird Feather’ is placed on the statuette, awarded to the winners of the Yershov All-Russian Literary Prize. It was established in 2005 in honor of the 190th anniversary of the writer and playwright. The prize is awarded annually for the best children’s project: a work, a magazine, a publication.
The statuette for the first prize is made in the form of the main character figurine of the fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse”, Ivan in an expensive caftan (jacket) and boots, hugging the Firebird. For the second and third prizes, a statuette with a figure of Ivan holding a Firebird feather in his hands is awarded. The fairy tale’s main character is depicted as a peasant’s son in a homespun coat (Russian peasant attire) and bast shoes.
The author of the sculpture housed in the Ishim Museum collection is a member of the Union of Russian Artists, Tobolsk bone carver, Minsalim Timergazeyev. He was born on January 28, 1950, in the village of Krasny Yar, Yalutorovsky District. At first, he studied in the art studio at the Tobolsk factory of artistic bone-carving products, and then — at the advanced training courses at the Abramtsevo School. From 1967 to 1981, Timergazeyev worked at the Tobolsk factory of artistic bone-carving products and then as a teacher at the city art school for children. In the early 1990s, he founded the art and industrial co-operative “Minsalim” under the Tobolsk State Historical and Architectural Memorial Estate. The master carves sculptures without sketches, immediately “in the hands”. Timergazeyev’s exhibitions are held in Salekhard, Magadan, Murmansk, and in the cities of Finland and Germany.
Timergazeyev carved a statuette of Ivan with a Firebird feather from an elkhorn. The master installed the sculpture on a birch stand with an embossed basket of flowers. The bone carver had previously tinted and waxed the material.
Bone carvers used elkhorn for a long time. It was perfectly amenable to processing, and the material also had an unusual texture. Not only small sculptures were made of it, but also knife handles and panels. The only drawback of the material is the internal porosity of the bone, but the masters usually built the composition in such a way that only the outer layer had to be cut.
