The bust of a Russian poet and a playwright Pyotr Yershov, made by the sculptor Nikolay Raspopov is displayed in the Yershov Museum Complex of Ishim City at the exhibition ‘Unknown Ershov’. Raspopov’s works are housed in Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Kyzyl museums, and in private collections. The sculptor was interested in Yershov’s works and could quote his fairy tale ‘The Little Humpbacked Horse’ (‘Konyok-Gorbunok’) by heart. Raspopov created a three-dimensional portrait of Yershov in the 1960s when he lived and worked in Tobolsk.

Pyotr Yershov — the Russian poet, novelist, playwright — was born in 1815 in Bezrukovo, Tobolsk Governorate. He often visited other villages and cities together with his father, who served as a public official. In 1827, Yershov entered the Tobolsk Gymnasium, and three years later, he moved to St. Petersburg, following his father. Here he enrolled at the Saint Petersburg Imperial University, the Faculty of History and Philology.

Yershov wrote the fairy tale ‘The Little Humpbacked Horse’ (‘Konyok-Gorbunok’) in his student years. The poet Alexander Pushkin said to the novice writer after reading this work, showing his approval, ‘Now I can quit writing such kinds of stories.’ The literature teacher, critic Pyotr Pletnev read excerpts from ‘The Little Humpbacked Horse’ to students during lectures. Many literary magazines of the capital published Yershov’s works. Moreover, the fairy tale became so popular that during Yershov’s life, there were seven editions of the book published.

After university, Yershov did not manage to get the desired position in the capital. He had to leave his friends, the community of writers and return to his homeland. Since 1836 he worked as a teacher at the Tobolsk Gymnasium, then headed both the gymnasium and the schools’ directorate of the Tobolsk Governorate. He became the State Counsellor in 1859, which can be equated with a modern vice-governor.

Yershov opened a girls’ school in Ishim, created an amateur gymnasium theater, as well as a society for helping Tobolsk Governorate students.

In Ishim city, on the day of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Pyotr Yershov on June 13, 2015, a monument dedicated to the poet was opened. The sculptor of the monument was Sergey Polegaev. The writer is depicted with a book and a quill in his hand, and on the base of the monument, there are reliefs with scenes from the fairy tale ‘The Little Humpbacked Horse’.
