An imalnitsa is a lasso for catching reindeer. It was made of reindeer skin and a block of reindeer bone with two holes.
To produce such a simple thing as rope in the conditions of pre-industrial technologies was a serious technical challenge. Suffice it to say that a significant export commodity for Russia in the 17th-19th centuries was hemp — the fiber, which was used to make ropes for ship rigging, so it was widely purchased by Western maritime countries. It was impossible to grow hemp in the climatic conditions of the Murmansk region, and in later times the Sami could only buy it. The need for strong ropes was very great, because the purpose of the lasso was to catch reindeer, large animals weighing up to 190 kilograms each.
