Murmansk Regional Museum of Local History was founded on October 17, 1926.
The “Nature” section of the museum features Russia’s only seabed exhibition — a dry aquarium — and a unique geological collection extracted from depths ranging from 100 meters to 12 kilometers during the drilling of the Kola ultra-deep well.
The entire history of the region from ancient times to the present is displayed in the following exhibitions: “The History of the Region from Ancient Times to the 17th Century”, “The Life of the Sami People in the 18th–19th Centuries”, “The Kola Peninsula in the 17th — early 20th century”, “The October Revolution, Civil War and Intervention on the Murman Coast”, “The Region in the 1920s–1930s”, “The Murmansk Region in 1945–1985”. The final section of the history exhibition is devoted to the changes in the social and economic life of the region in the 1980s.
There are over 170 thousand exhibits in the museum’s collections.
The Museum complex includes
the Museum of History, Culture and Life of the Kola Sami People in the village
of Lovozero and the Museum of History, Culture and Life of the Pomor People in
the village of Umba.
