Historically, icons were painted in oil on wood at monasteries and icon painting centers. Such images were created according to all the canons, but they were very expensive. With the spread of the Orthodox faith, there was a need to create cheaper images of saints.
In the late 19th century, special factories for printing icons on paper and tin appeared in Russia. Such images of saints were easy to produce and quite cheap, so they were in great demand among believers.
The Museum Complex of Kuybyshev houses a tin icon “St. Joseph the Wonderworker of Volokolamsk” of the early 20th century. Probably, it is a fragment for the revetment of a large icon, according to art historians — a lectern icon (an image that was placed on a special table, a lectern, in the church).
The image of the saint was printed on a thin steel sheet of a small format using printing plates on which paint of different colors was applied. Brown paint was used on the margins of the icon. A narrow convex frame is stamped along the edges; the edges of the sheet are bent and attached to the board with four nails. The name of the icon is written in blue in Church Slavonic in the upper left corner on the front side. Joseph of Volokolamsk is depicted against the background of a monastery in the lower left corner of the icon.
Saint Joseph, Abbot of Volotsk was a miracle worker, ecclesiastical writer and publicist. He founded a monastery in Volokolamsk. Together with St. Gennady of Novgorod, he led the fight against religious movements that preached heresy — various teachings that differed from the dogmas of the Orthodox Church.
In the icon, Joseph of Volokolamsk is depicted as a kneeling compassionate elder in a monastic robe with his hands pressed together in prayer.
In the upper right is the image of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, which is carried by two angels. Above the head of each of them is the inscription “A.G.”, which means “Angel of God”.
