The Artist and His Fiancee

#2
In the painting “The Artist and His Fiancee”, created 5 years before his death, Chagall addressed the topic of relationship between an Artist and his Muse. The artist’s bride tends to him while he is sitting on a stool holding a palette. The face of the artist resembles the master. The figures painted in front of a landscape are almost ethereal.

About the motifs
#4
In the landscape, Chagall united motifs from many of his works. We can see Vitebsk with its huts and the Pokrovsky church, Paris with Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and bridges over the Seine, and an acrobat with musicians. Among the figures floating in the sky (some of them are depicted upside down), we can recognize a graphical image of Chagall’s face. This way, the artist could overlook his work.
