Pavel Pleshanov
Christ with Martha and Mary

Pavel Pleshanov painted the picture Christ with Martha and Mary in 1855. The artist illustrated an episode from the Gospel according to Luke. Two sisters, Martha and Mary, were receiving Jesus Christ in their home: Martha was busy with her domestic chores, and Mary was listening to the Savior’s sermon sitting by His feet. When the hostess got indignant that her sister was not helping her, Jesus answered: “Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” At the time, the subject was considered “lofty” — it was a term that the Imperial Academy of Arts used to denote historical, biblical and mythological themes.

The master executed the picture according to all requirements of the Academy: The figures are traced in accordance with models of Antiquity, secondary details are painted in subdued tones, and a few color accents were used to balance the composition. The master executed the picture according to all requirements of the Academy: The figures are traced in accordance with models of Antiquity, secondary details are painted in subdued tones, and a few color accents were used to balance the composition.

Art historian Alexei Novitsky left a comment saying that Pleshanov had originated from a wealthy family. His father, merchant of 1st Class, generated multimillion sales in Petersburg, so Pleshanov could choose any occupation he wished. In 1848, the young man was admitted to the Imperial Academy of Arts, and, simultaneously, took private lessons from Professor Fyodor Bruni.

Bruni thought Pleshanov’s [H1] lessons were a ‘noble passion of a wealthy amateur who is not totally devoid of abilities, ” and treated his works with more indulgence than pictures of his classmates. The Academy bestowed accolades and medals on the artist on a number of occasions, although he was never conferred a grand golden medal (the highest award). In 1853, Pleshanov received commendation “for merits of the composition” in his canvas Andromache Mourning over Hector’s Body, but a comment was made that Emperor Nicholas I was displeased with the tableau.

After graduating from the Academy, Pleshanov went to Rome at his own expense, where he continued to improve his skills as an artist. In 1865, he painted a portrait of his father, Fyodor Pleshanov. Four years later, the artist was promoted to professorship for the painting The Assassination of Tsarevich Dmitry in Uglich. The Imperial Hermitage bought the canvas for 3,800 rubles. (An average pay of a worker at the time was about 25 rubles a year.)

By the 1870s, Pleshanov’s brother had ruined his father’s business. As a result, the family had to move from a luxurious house to an apartment provided by the Academy. Painting was now the only source of income for the artist. Until his last day, Pleshanov worked at the Academy and painted pictures. The imperial family was among his customers.
