Mikhail Nikolaevich Uglovsky, Major of the Guard, commanded an artillery regiment during the war. He was born in Vologodchina into a peasant family. He joined the Red Army after a draft call when he was 22, and got stationed in one of Privolzhsky Military District’s artillery elements. Mikhail Uglovsky decided to dedicate himself to military service. After finishing a second lieutenant training course, the young artillery man tested new weapons for a time. He was given his first award, the Order of Honor, in 1938, for operational commitment.
First Lieutenant Uglovsky was sent to the Kyiv Special Military District. Its military bases formed the Southwestern Front on June 22, 1941. Soviet warriors retreated in the first months of war, taking disturbing casualties. In July, the artillery brigade that included Mikhail Nikolaevich covered the stepback of front squads across the Sluch River near Novohrad-Volynskyi.
Uglovsky’s artillery battalion did not manage to make their stepback in time, and the enemy surrounded them. Their reunion with the Red Army’s functional commands was only possible by November. The artillery battalion under Uglovsky’s command fought in the Belgorod Axis until March of 1942. The squad repelled the counterattacks of the Germans at first, and later they distinguished themselves in the Battle of Stalingrad.
In May of 1943, before the Battle of Kursk, Major Uglovsky took command of the 122nd Artillery Regiment of the Guard. At the beginning of July, this unit’s gun lines were arranged near the village of Yakovlevo in the Belgorod Oblast. The German army attempted an assault on the 7th of July. About 50 enemy aircraft attack units were launched in the air. The artillery regiment encountered two infantry battalions and 100 tanks, which threatened to surround them.
Mikhail Nikolaevich had proven himself to be a talented commander. Not only had he commanded the defense, but he had also participated in battle to inspire his subordinates by his own example. Taking the place of a killed gunner, the regimental commander shot three German tanks. The next day the German tank unit surrounded one of the regiment’s batteries near the village of Pokrovka.
Major of the Guard Uglovsky arranged a counterattack, resulting in the retreat of the enemy. At the crucial moment, Mikhail Nikolaevich personally took four tanks out of action at a point blank range. The squad destroyed over 100 of the fascist tanks and 100 ammunition haulers, and caused major damage to the enemy troops.
The Soviet Command started the Belgorod-Kharkov Offensive Operation in August of 1943. The Red Army pushed. Uglovsky’s regiment accomplished a 100 km distance over five days, beginning on August 3. However, on August 8, Mikhail Nikolaevich’s vehicle was bombarded. The regiment commander died the same day from the wounds he received.
