There is a place on Earth that is infinitely dear to you — your homeland where you were born, where you grew up and came from, which you left in your search for a more exciting life. The Altai of my childhood is the birch groves with Job’s tears around my home village, the mysterious areas with wolf steps, little woods with bird cherry and arrowwood bushes, strawberry fields, the winding Bobrovka and Losikha Rivers, the beaver’s lodges along their banks, the smell of taiga and meadow grass. <…> Altai is my center of attraction. It represents my childhood and perhaps the happiest time in my life. Altai is my ‘small’ motherland and my great love.

Keeping in touch with his fellow villagers was very important for Gherman Titov. When traveling to Altai, he always visited the Polkovnikovo village where his family moved when he was three, spent a lot of time talking to neighbors and former classmates, and dropped by the school and the museum. He valued his connections with the past and did his best to help his village and region.
In 2000, the cosmonaut visited Altai for the last time. In his last-ever interview, Gherman Titov said,

I have just visited this area. I flew there on purpose because I wanted to breathe in the air of my childhood, look at these fields and see what is going on there…

Titov spent a week in Polkovnikovo where he met his childhood friends, local teachers, and fellow villagers. He tried to put off the departure from his home village as if he felt that he would never return.
On September 11, 2000, the famous cosmonaut turned 65. Just more than a week later, on September 20, Gherman Titov, a Hero of the Soviet Union, a member of the State Duma, and a reserve colonel general passed away.
To pay the tribute of respect to their world-known fellow countryman, the cosmonaut’s classmates continue to participate in the museum’s activities. They tell school students stories about the time Titov was a child and a young man and remember his contribution to the life of the local area, as well as the importance of his legendary space flight for the entire country.
