This national flag of the Russian Federation was flown on the Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft. The tricolor visited the International Space Station (ISS) during Expedition 18 attended by a permanent crew including the commander of the ship Michael Fincke and the flight engineer Yuri Lonchakov, as well as the space tourist Richard Garriott.
The flight lasted 178 days, 0 hours, 14 minutes, and 27 seconds. The fact that the flag of the Russian Federation left the Earth is confirmed by a special “Certificate” and an imprint of the ISS onboard seal on the white stripe of the national symbol.
The spacecraft with the tricolor on board was launched on October 12, 2008. During the expedition, the astronauts carried out the required maintenance activities on the Progress cargo spaceships, their Soyuz spacecraft, and the Space Shuttle. They conducted a number of experiments and carried out important scientific research.
On April 8, 2009, Soyuz TMA-13 landed northeast of the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. The flag was handed over to the Titov Museum by his colleague, cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov in 2011. The Hero of the Russian Federation also brought unique photo exhibits to Altai Krai, including two dozen pictures taken by Lonchakov himself. The photographs were donated to the Altai State Memorial Museum of Gherman Titov.
Yuri Valentinovich Lonchakov was born on March 4, 1965 in Balkhash, Dzhezkazgan region, Kazakh SSR. In Aktobe, he finished secondary school No. 22, and later the local Patsaev School of Young Pilots. After that, Lonchakov completed training in “Tactical command of naval missile-carrying aviation” at the Orenburg Higher Military Aviation School.
He served in the naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet, and then in air defense units. In 1998, after graduating from the Zhukovsky Military Air Engineering Academy (specialty “Testing of aircraft and their systems”), he was enrolled in the cosmonaut squad. He made three space flights and two spacewalks. By the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of September 24, 2010, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Engineering Sciences. On the same day, Colonel Yuri Lonchakov was confirmed as the Squad Commander of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.
