Close to the Sky
#2
Gennady Egorovich Svinin is a talented artist who loves the beautiful nature of his native region.

His striking landscape paintings are full of air and light — they seem to live and breathe. In his canvases the artist brings to life the ancient cedars, the slim birch trees, the tender young flowers, the mountain lakes and the mysterious boreal forests.

The artist’s rich palette of bright, living colors is the first thing that catches the viewer’s eye when they look at this painting. The atmosphere of the painting is light and fluid — it seems to be filled with radiant sunlight.

Gennady Svinin’s painting Close to the Sky depicts the unique beauty of the Kuznetsk region. Under a blue sky streaked with snow-white clouds the long-awaited Siberian spring is making its appearance. In the foreground we see young flowers, and, behind them, a meadow drenched in sunlight. And, further back, there is a striking slate-grey spire of rock, surrounded by emerald-green vegetation. The picture is framed by old fir trees stretching upwards towards the sky. In this picture there is a line of clouds at eye level — this meeting of the vault of heaven and the surface of the earth allows the artist to show that this place is very “close to the sky”.

The painting is executed in a rather naive style — as evidenced by its simplified forms — which suggest the Primitivist school of art - and bright colors. This painting creates an atmosphere of tranquility and calm, and a sense of love for the natural world around us. The landscape depicted in Close to the Sky touch the heart of everyone who sees the painting.

The artist was inspired by the mountain ridge of Tiger-Tysh (the Celestial Teeth). This ridge in the Kuznetsk Alatau region has been a popular destination for mountain tourists since the Soviet era. The region is celebrated for its pure air and magnificent nature. There are crystal-clear streams and rivers with their sources in deep blue mountain lakes, and many springs and waterfalls. It is a land of shrubs, residual hills and stone rivers full of boulders exceeding a meter in height. There is a wide range of plant cover, from high grass and forest plants, intermingled with piles of rocks and stones hidden in the undergrowth, to mountain tundra- a shrubland of dwarf willow and birch bushes. And there are mysterious caves hidden in many of the towers of rock.

The Kuznetsk Alatau region contains the national nature reserve of the same name, which is home to many unique species of flora and fauna, many of which are protected.

Gennady Svinin has a special talent for expressing the unique beauty of his region through his art.
