One of the most prominent representatives of the first generation of Ossetian medical intelligentsia was the surgeon Lavrenty Gazdanov, a native of a village near Vladikavkaz. He played an important role in the development of medicine and the healthcare system in not only Ossetia but also all of Terek Oblast. Lavrentiy Gazdanov (Crimea-Soltan, Dzybyn Batakoyevich) was born in 1873 in the village of Olginskoye. Seeing his son’s desire for knowledge and talent for learning, Batako Gazdanov sent Lavrentiy to a village parochial school, from which the future doctor graduated in 1866.
His family supported his wish to continue studying. For example, his uncle Sagye Gazdanov partially financed Lavrentiy’s education at the Vladikavkaz Classical Gymnasium for Men. A year later, Gazdanov became a zemstvo doctor in the Yelisavetgrad district of Kherson Oblast and head of the zemstvo hospital in the city of Voznesensk. After another four years, the promising specialist was sent to Saint Petersburg to improve his skills.
At the start of 1902, by decree of the Vladikavkaz city duma, a hospital was opened in the city. There was the issue of the organization of the surgical department, and due to the outcome of a competition, Lavrentiy Gazdanov became the hospital’s surgeon.

In 1911, thanks to Dr. Gazdanov’s active assistance, a new building for surgery, with an exemplary operating room, was constructed in Vladikavkaz.
