In 1868, Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Emperor Alexander II, made an introductory trip across Russia. Grand Duke and his entourage stayed in Tyumen from July 27 to July 28. Vladimir Alexandrovich visited the Spasskaya church and the room with the “tsar boat”; his father crossed the Tura River on this boat in 1837. The next part of the excursion was on the other part of Tyumen, across the river. There, Vladimir Alexandrovich visited several tanneries and enterprises, including the city mayor Filimon Kolmogorov’s factory.
On the evening of July 27, the Grand Duke went to the exhibition of industrial and agricultural goods, arranged specially for him. It consisted of eight sections and occupied several buildings. As one of the exhibition organizers remembered, the people of Tyumen showed the distinguished guests that “the Siberians are not as idle as it seems according to the popular opinion of most people who have not seen Siberia.”
After that, Vladimir Alexandrovich visited the territory of the public garden, and on July 28 he visited the Trinity monastery, female and male city schools. The next day Grand Duke left Tyumen and continued his journey.
The Tyumen artist Ivan Kalganov depicted Grand Duke’s entry into Tyumen on July 27, 1868. The exhibition displays a photocopy of the painting; the pictorial canvas has not survived to this day.
In the foreground, the artist depicted a carriage pulled by four horses. Grand Duke sits on the left, and the Governor-General of Western Siberia Alexander Khrushchev sits on the right. A second carriage follows the carriage of Vladimir Alexandrovich, where the Adjutant-General Count Boris Perovsky and Academician Alexander Middendorf sit. On both sides of one of the central streets of Tyumen, Kalganov depicted a jubilant crowd of citizens and guests of the city, meeting Grand Duke. In addition, you can see the representatives of the Tyumen merchant class and officials in the picture. For example, there is the Tyumen merchant, awards recipient, and philanthropist Kondraty Sheshukov.
Photocopies of Ivan Kalganov’s painting “The Entry of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich into Tyumen” were successfully sold at the Irbit Fair in 1869. It was also exhibited at the exhibition of local goods in Tyumen in 1872. The picture brought the artist wide popularity. Thanks to this, Kalganov took up the post of art teacher at the Omsk district school and school for girls as well.
