Felix and Irina Yusupov in the Palace
#2
There is Prince Felix Yusupov with his wife Irina in the green room of the Rakityansky Palace in the photo. The picture, a copy of which is displayed at the exhibition, was taken during their exile in 1916.

In February 1914, with the consent of Emperor Nicholas II, Prince Felix Yusupov married his niece, Grand Duchess Irina Alexandrovna. It was the last wedding celebration in the Yusupov family before the revolution. The wedding of Felix and Irina was also the last pre-war celebration in the imperial family.

The wedding took place on February 22, 1914 in the house church of the Anichkov Palace. “Seated” parents of the bride were Emperor Nicholas II and his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. An entry in her diary has been preserved: “Today, here, in the church, was the wedding of my dear little Irina.”

In his memoirs published in exile, Felix described the day of his wedding as follows:
#4
Irina appeared arm in arm with emperor. The sovereign brought her to me, and as soon as he went to his place, the ceremony began. The priest spread out a pink silk carpet, on which, according to custom, the bride and groom must pass. According to the superstition, who of the young will step on the carpet first, that person will be the first in the family. Irina hoped that she would be faster than me, but she got tangled in the train, and I was ahead of her. After the wedding, we headed the procession to the reception hall, where we stood next to the imperial family to receive congratulations, as usual. The queue of congratulators lasted more than two hours. Irina could barely stand. Then, we went to the Moyka, where my parents were already waiting. They met us on the stairs, according to custom, with bread and salt. Then, the servants came with congratulations. And again, everything is the same as in Anichkov.

At the beginning of World War I, Felix Yusupov, among other representatives of the Russian aristocracy, took an accelerated course of military training and received an officer rank. Irina became a nurse and helped in the hospital. By that time, the Yusupovs had a daughter, Irina.

After Grigori Rasputin was killed by conspirators in Yusupov’s palace on the night of December 30, 1916, Yusupov was sent to his mother’s estate Rakitnoye in Kursk governorate under the secret supervision of the police. There, he lived with his wife Irina and his parents — Zinaida and Felix.
