Friedrich drew Two Men by the Sea in the 1830s, which is the later period of his career. In his last years he often revisited the motifs he had used in the past. People contemplating the beautiful scenery on the sea shore or meditating over the mysterious existence of the elements is a frequent theme in romanticism and Friedrich’s art. In this drawing Caspar Friedrich repeats the composition of his painting “Two Men by the Sea” dated 1817. He enjoyed fame in his mature years, but in the decline of his days Caspar Friedrich was almost forgotten in his own country. However, his talent was in demand at the Russian court; prominent Russian romanticist Vasily Zhukovsky appreciated his skills as a color stylist and poetic composition master. Russian nobility and members of the royal family eagerly purchased paintings and drawings by Caspar Friedrich. The empress Alexandra Feodorovna was a fan of Friedrich’s art.
