A journey to Teplitz inspired Hummel to create this painting. Hummel shifts the focus from the mountainous landscape in the background to the genre scene in the foreground. The painter managed to combine romantic motifs with a naturalistic rendition of the details, static features, and expressive figurativeness of his characters. These are typical qualities of Biedermeier – the artistic style that emerged in 1815–1848. It conveys a celebration of the simple values of daily life and worldly pleasures that all people know.
