Alexander Gerasimov always viewed India as a country of unexplored mysteries and wonders. He witnessed for himself how truly strong traditional art was in India and how it helped the people to preserve their national culture and spiritual wealth for centuries. This was the profound folk art that Gerasimov was constantly looking for. With each visit to India, the artist got acquainted with more cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Mysuru. His “Indian” series of works shows considerable artistry.
Gerasimov’s highly artistic works, dedicated to this unique “land of wonders”, perfectly convey the flair and charm of the East. The exhibition of paintings, that Gerasimov brought to the USSR, touched the audience and was an important event on the cultural scene of the country. The artist presented his view of India with its great culture, traditions, customs, and people.
Mysuru (Mysore) is a city in India and the center of the district of the same name. It is a very interesting and picturesque place, the third largest city in the state of Karnataka, and an ancient place of pilgrimage. This important commercial center is always full of tourists, with all the main events happening downtown on small streets. This city has many shops that sell brassware, national clothes, kitchenware, books, and jewelry. There are also several antique shops. Small houses in Mysuru are often completely covered with advertisement posters. The landscape consists of alternating small towns, villages and, of course, fields overgrown with various plants and cacti. Sometimes there are horses harnessed to two-wheeled carts passing by. People can be seen walking and riding cycle rickshaws and scooters and driving cars.
Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov was the first vice-president of the “USSR—India” society and did a lot to strengthen cultural and friendly ties between the countries. He made a huge contribution to the formation and development of Soviet and Indian painting, was a mentor to many talented students and followers, and advanced the development of new ideas in Russian fine arts. Oftentimes, the artist described India as a great country with fabulous nature.
