Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov was born and raised in the small provincial town of Kozlov, Tambov Governorate, in the central part of Russia. Founded in 1635, the town is located on the hilly bank of the Lesnoy Voronezh River. At the turn of the 20th century, the town had about 40,000 residents and stood out with its numerous beautiful churches. According to the artist’s memoirs, the entire town consisted of one-story wooden houses with three windows, decorated with carved platbands, with the exception of a few three-story houses. There were also some occasional two-story houses on the main streets.

Kozlov practiced a quite traditional, orthodox way of living.

The town woke up early — at four o’clock in the summer and five in the winter. Then, tea drinking took place in the tavern. Birds were already chirping there, and the air smelled of freshly baked bread. The taverns opened early and closed just as early — at nine in the evening. By that hour, respectable people had already had a hearty dinner and closed the gate — no one was expected to visit this late. In the taverns, there never was any carousing, in fact, it would never even occur to anyone to ask for vodka or beer. People only drank tea. Showing up drunk in the common room meant losing credibility and business.

Taverns were not the only place for drinking tea — most of the population preferred to do it at home. The artist turned to the theme of tea drinking in the painting “House on Piteynaya Street”. He affectionately conveyed the view of the windows of the house, where the owners can be seen enjoying a cup of tea, most likely not the first one. People could drink tea for hours, having a few cups in a row and pouring tea into saucers.

The image of the people that the artist created is not specific: it is generalized, depicting a man and a woman, the owners of the house, comfortably seated next to the open windows. It was important for Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov to acquaint the viewers with the way of life, customs, and mores that existed in the town back then. He also focused on the features of the house itself: it resembles a Russian terem with openwork platbands. The ambiance is built on the saturated summer verdure, reflecting the sunbeams. The artist fitted this unusual house into the general view of an old street in Kozlov.
