Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was born on September 17, 1857 in the village of Izhevskoye in Spasskoye County of Ryazan Governorate, in a house on POlnaya Street (today it is called Tsiolkovsky Street). Later, the scientist was remembering Ryazan: ‘My roots are in the Ryazan soil. This is where I spent probably my best years, the things I have experienced there. My mother taught me literacy there, and my first bold thoughts came to me there… I imagine… that the basic ideas and the love of eternal urge to get there -- to reach the Sun, to be liberated from the chains of gravitation – were planted in me there’.
His father Edward Tsiolkovsky worked in northern governorates of the country after his graduation from Petersburg Forest Institute. In 1843 he took the position of forester of the Pronsky County of Ryazan Governorate. It was there that he met his future wife Maria YumAsheva. In 1849, Tsiolkovsky Senior was transferred to the Spassky County of Ryazan governorate. Having visited the village of Izhevskoye, it was there where he decided to settle down.
Izhevskoye at that time was a major trading center with well-developed seasonal cooperage. In terms of population, Izhevskoye ranked fourth in the governorate after cities such as Ryazan, Kasimov and Skopin.
In the village the Tsiolkovsky family did not have their own residence. From 1849 to 1854 they lived in the house of merchant MikhAilov on KrAsnaya Street. The couple had three sons: Alexander, Dmitri, Joseph. In 1854, the Tsiolkovsky moved to a more spacious house on Polnaya street, where Konstantin was born. This house was built in the early 19th century and belonged to landowner Demidov, the estate manager of Izhevskoye. According to local historians, in the middle of the 19th century this house was used as a post office, and later it became a residence that was rented out.
Tsiolkovsky’s childhood was marred by tragedy. When he was about 10 years old, he fell ill with scarlet fever. The disease was severe and caused a terrible complication - deafness.
