IRFE Fashion House

In 1924, Irina and Felix Yusupov founded the fashion house “IRFE” in Paris. As the prince himself recalled, the idea came to him after his return from the United States.

The fashion house occupied the entire ground floor, and later first floor, of a house located at 10 rue Dufault. Almost the entire staff consisted of friends of the Yusupovs and other Russian immigrants. The presentation of the first collection was held at the Hotel “Ritz” on Place Vendôme and made a good impression on the high society of Paris.

The popularity of “IRFE” in the first weeks after its opening was largely due to interest in Felix Yusupov. In his “Memoirs” he mentioned that clients “came out of curiosity and for the excitement. One demanded tea from a samovar. Another lady, an American, wanted to see the “prince”, who was rumored to have phosphorescent eyes like a predator!”

Yusupov described his encounter with another client as follows:

What the hell! — cried out our new client. — Are you the prince? You do not look like a murderer. I’m glad you escaped with a whole skin from those filthy Bolsheviks.” She lifted a shot of vodka with a hand adorned with rings and bracelets, and looking at me with a sneer from under her remarkable, heavily lined eyelids, she drank in a gulp to my health. “Make me a kokoshnik and fifteen dresses. And ten more for this cretin, ” she added, with a nod to the little Austrian baroness, her lodger”.

In 1925, the first branch of “IRFE” opened in Touquet, the management of which the Yusupovs entrusted with Prince Gavrila, a cousin of Irina Alexandrovna, and his wife, Antonina Nesterovskaya, a former ballerina of the Imperial Ballet. Subsequently, two more branches of the fashion house opened: in London and Berlin.

Following the success of the first show, the Yusupovs rented new, more favorably located premises in the center of Paris near the Place de la Madeleine. At the Prince’s request, the interior was completely redesigned. The wooden panels were repainted a light gray, and the walls were covered with gray velvet. The salon, as was the custom in all respectable houses, was furnished with mahogany furniture upholstered in gray cretonne with floral patterns. The windows were curtained with draperies of yellow silk, and the interior was decorated with antique engravings and showcases with antique family statuettes.
