Girls in black

Renoir enjoyed painting Parisian women, with their grace and fine charm. In his painting Girls in black, the artist depicted two fashionable women in a Parisian café wearing dark dresses and hats.

About the manner of painting
#5
Influenced by a theory that dictated the use of solar spectrum tones, the painter avoids the color black, portraying the girls’ clothes with complex combinations of blue, lilac, and red hues. At the same time, his manner is different here: instead of small strokes and blurry contours, he chooses wide colorful planes, while the figure of the girl on the left is drawn using a line. This shows the influence of Ingres, whose artwork interested Renoir during that period.
