Flower still lifes were quite common among Renoir’s works. In the painting Bouquet of Chrysanthemums and Japanese Fan, the artist addressed one of his favorite motifs and turned it into a bright spectacle of pure, unmixed colors. French artists of this time were fascinated by the expressive decorative qualities of Japanese art, which is evidenced by the fact that a Japanese fan is depicted together with the chrysanthemums.
