The image of Virgin Mary is one of the earliest and most beloved in Russia. According to the legend, the first icon of Our Lady was first painted by Luke the Evangelist on a table where the Holy Family was seated: Mary, her husband Joseph and the little Jesus. The icon was stored in Jerusalem, and in 450, was brought to Constantinople.

Before the icon of Virgin Mary came to Vladimir in 1155 and received its name, it spent some time in a Ukrainian convent in the town of Vyshgorod as a present to the princes Yuri Dolgoruki and his son, Andrey Bogolyubsky. The latter took the icon to the Assumption Cathedral in the town of Vladimir on the river Klyazma. At those times, first copies of Our Lady of Vladimir appeared.

In 1986, one of such copies was acquired by the Iskitim Municipal Museum of Arts and History from a collector. Before that, the copy was kept in a monastery in the village of Sviyazhsk. The copy was probably created by an unknown artist in the XVII century, and in the XIX century, it was restored.
As well as the original icon, it features two figures: Virgin Mary and the small Jesus Christ. The icon is of the Eleusa type, where the Mother presses her cheek against the cheek of God the Son.

The icon from Vladimir has two features that distinguish it from similar icons. Between the faces of Mary and Jesus, there is no space; they are pressed closely against each other. That was how the artist conveyed Our Lady’s feelings: her apprehension for the Savior’s life on Earth. The second peculiarity is the fact that only in the Eleusa icons we can see the sole of the boy’s foot. This symbolizes Jesus Christ’s defenselessness against his fate.

The artist painted the icon in shades of red and golden. The red color symbolized the blood shed by the Savior on the cross to redeem the sins of the mankind. The golden is the symbol of holiness, majesty and selectedness of Christ.

The original and the copies of Our Lady of Vladimir are said to be the cause of the miraculous rescue from invaders: the salvation of Moscow from the khan Tamerlane in 1395, from the Tartar-Mongol yoke in 1480 and from the Crimean troops in 1521. Orthodox Christians pray to the icon of Our Lady to ask for protection for themselves and their children from misfortune.
