Atlas of Tibetan medicine. Sheet 69. ‘Subsequent Tantra’.
The sheet is divided into 12 lines and illustrates the 18th — 20th chapters f the ‘Subsequent Tantra’ dedicated to the bowels purification and bloodletting.
The 18th chapter opens with an illustration of inserting the therapeutical clysma ‘niruha’ along with the images of sick people with counter-indications for this procedure. ‘Niruha’ is the name of the procedure when the medicament for healing the diseases of small and large intestines is inserted into the anus. Clysma cannot be used in case of rectal prolapse, intense diarrhea, ‘fresh fever’ or weakening of a ‘fire heat’ in the stomach.
The 19th chapter of the ‘Subsequent Tantra’ is about the ‘vessels purification’. It is a radical body purification with the very strong cleanser which cannot be used during the winter regardless of the disease. The ‘vessels purification’ procedure is recommended to the women who lost the ability to give birth and in case of blood diseases, arthragra, rheumatism, tumors and dropsy.
Indications and counter-indications for bloodletting are described in the 20th chapter and are illustrated by the images in five lower table’s lines. Bloodletting is the procedure of letting the “sick” blood out of the organism as a result of cutting the needed blood vessel at the needed place with the fleam. Instruments for bloodletting should always be made by a blacksmith using the high quality steel and performing all rituals. In total 26 different fleams are described. Bloodletting is performed in case of fever diseases caused by blood or “bile”. It is not recommended to perform the procedure in case of diseases caused by “pneuma” or “phlegm” disorders, and also to the patients possessed by demons, pregnant women, children before 16 and people after 70. Bloodletting cannot be performed in the place where the blood vessel branches and also at the places where the “life potency” is localized at the moment.
The last graph has the text in Tibetan explaining the contents of the sheet.
