Atlas of Tibetan medicine. Sheet 70. ‘Subsequent Tantra’.
The sheet has illustrations for the 20th chapter (continuation) and the 21st chapter of the ‘Subsequent Tantra’.
The two figures shown from the front and from the back have schematic images of vessels used for bloodletting, in total 79 places for bloodletting. These are the veins located on the body surface and clearly seen in case of applying a tourniquet (tourniquets are usually applied depending on the location of a needed blood vessel). The instruments used for this procedure (fleams of different shapes and bamboo pincers for the tongue) are depicted nearby. The procedure of bloodletting includes preparation for the bloodletting, bloodletting itself and stopping the blood.
The 21st chapter is about the thermal procedures. The lower part of the sheet has images of scenes connected with these procedures in three graphs. Thermal procedures are the firings and warm-ups of the different points of acupunctural therapy and are believed to be a very effective remedial measure in Tibetan medicine. They are performed by full or partial firing of so called ‘moxes’ (small cones or plane pills made from the dried wormwood leaves) at the points. The place and time for gathering herbs used for tinder for firing is shown at the beginning of the third graph. The herbs are gathered by the kids in the clean places in autumn at the time of the increscent moon. At the end of the graph a scene with the procedure itself is depicted.
The patients with indications and counter-indications for firing are shown at the last graphs. The thermal procedures are recommended in case of indigestion, weakening the ‘fire heat’ of the stomach, edema and dropsy. The procedures are counter indicated in case of all ‘bile’ diseases and blood diseases, problems with sense organs and so on. Also it is not allowed to perform the procedures at the time of the full moon, strong weather, the 1st, 18th and 22nd days of the month.
The last graph has a text in Tibetan explaining the sheet’s content.
