The Volgograd Museum of Local Lore holds a first aid kit belonging to Alexandra Borisovna Gomazova — the nurse of the 329th field reserve hospital. Such nurses provided medical care to the wounded and sick in hospitals.

Due to the shortage of personnel during the First World War, nurses had to be trained in short-term courses that took from 6 to 8 weeks. As a result of that, about 100 thousand nurses worked in the Red Cross in 1917. The nurses united in communities that were under the jurisdiction of the Red Cross Society. The nurses worked in medical institutions, in military hospitals, All-Russian Zemstvo Union hospitals and other institutions.

On the battlefield, first aid was provided to the wounded as self and mutual aid, as well as by orderlies and paramedics. The first aid consisted of applying a bandage and immobilizing a person. The wounded was then sent to forward dressing station, where it was decided whether they should be evacuated to a hospital or infirmary, located far away in the rear.
