Konstantin Apollonovich Savitsky was an outstanding Russian artist, a skilled genre painter, a keen observer of Russian life, and an outstanding teacher who improved the process of teaching new painters.

Konstantin Savitsky lived in Saint Petersburg between 1883 and 1889. There he worked as a teacher at the School of Technical Drawing of Baron Alexander von Stieglitz. In 1891, the artist moved to Moscow and started working for the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Three years later, Konstantin Savitsky became a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts, in 1897, he was awarded the title of academician of painting “for his achievements in fine arts”.

The artist developed his own teaching program and made changes to the educational process of the Penza Art School. The best graduates of this institution were accepted to the Academy of Arts without exams.

Konstantin Savitsky created the drawing on display for the story titled “The Fatalist” from Lermontov’s novel “A Hero of Our Time”. Its composition is limited by the size of the room where the scene takes place. A group of officers is seated at a rectangular table in excited anticipation.

The figure of Lieutenant Vulic holding a pistol to his head is depicted on the right side of the drawing. In the background, along the wall with windows, are household items and officer weapons. Konstantin Savitsky put his signature in the lower-right corner.

Mikhail Lermontov described this episode in “A Hero of Our Time” as follows:
#4
Gentlemen, I beg of you not to move! ’ said Vulic, pressing the muzzle of the pistol to his forehead. We were all petrified.
‘Mr. Pechorin, ’ he went on, ‘will you take a card and throw it up in the air.’
As I recall now, I picked up an ace of hearts from the table and threw it up; with bated breath and eyes expressive of terror and a vague curiosity we glanced from the pistol to the fateful ace which was now slowly fluttering downwards. The moment it touched the table, Vulic pulled the trigger — but the pistol missed fire.

This illustration, as well as the works of Mikhail Vrubel from the museum’s collection, was part of the book edition prepared by the Ivan Kushnerev & Company Printing Shop and the Pryanishnikov’s Bookstore. The edition also included Konstantin Savitsky’s illustrations for the ballad “The Sea Princess” and the story “Taman”.
