Lermontov House was first mentioned in the Russian press in 1859. The notes reported that the house in Pyatigorsk, where Mikhail Lermontov had spent the last two months of his life, survived, and that it was necessary to turn this house into a museum.
However, it was only on April 21, 1911, that the Pyatigorsk City Duma made a historic decision to “purchase the Lermontov estate for 15,000 rubles.” A number of bureaucratic procedures and delays, as well as the negative attitude of Count Illarion Vorontsov-Dashkov, who was the Governor of the Caucasus Viceroyalty at the time, delayed the finalization of the issue. The problem was solved only with the intervention of the president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences.
On July 15, 1912 (the day and month when Mikhail Lermontov died), members of the Caucasian Mountain Hiking Society gathered in the Lermontov estate to celebrate their 10th anniversary. This date is considered to be the birthday of the Lermontov Museum.
In 1946, the museum received the former house of General Pyotr Verzilin. That is the place where, in 1841, the tragic quarrel took place between Mikhail Lermontov and Nikolay Martynov, which led to their duel. On July 7, 1973, the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR “On the Establishment of the Mikhail Lermontov State Museum-Reserve” was adopted.
As of today, the museum complex includes four estates of the Lermontov era. The visitors can attend four exhibitions: “Lermontov and the Caucasus”, “Lermontov Through the Eyes of the Artists”, Lermontov Memorial House, and “Mikhail Lermontov in Music, Theater and Cinema. House of Alexander Alyabyev”.
