“Orthodox Icons from across the Don Region” is an exhibition that presents the history of icon painting, specific historical and regional artistic traditions, and the presence of icons in both churches and everyday life of people. The exhibit features icons that are unique in their style and subjects, providing an opportunity to explore the diversity of Russian Orthodox icons.
One of the oldest icons in the museum collection is the 16th-century “Dormition of Our Lady”. The exhibition also features a rare 18th-century icon, “Our Lady of Akhtyrka”. Both icons form part of the series of icons dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Other notable icons include “Lord Sabaoth”, “John the Baptist — Angel of the Wilderness”, “Christ Enthroned”, “The Most Holy Trinity”, and “The Old Testament Trinity”.
Apart from icons, the exhibition features crosses,
folding icons, books, church objects, and models of Orthodox churches from the Don
region.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
