The Orenburg Regional Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1960. The greater part of its artifacts came to its holdings from the Orenburg Regional Ethnography Museum, some works were donated by the Tretyakov Gallery, A.N. Radishchev Saratov State Museum of Fine Arts, and the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR. Other art objects were purchased from private collectors in Moscow, Leningrad and Orenburg. In 1985, the Orenburg Museum moved to the classicistic building of the City Duma designed by architect Mikhail Malakhov in the early 19th century. In 2012, the Central Exhibition Hall was also subordinated to the museum.
