The museum’s collection encompasses both classical and contemporary art. A major part of it is dedicated to Russian paintings of the 18th–early 20th century. Some of the most noteworthy artworks were painted by Dmitry Levitsky, Karl Bryullov, and Vladimir Borovikovsky. Jacques Stella’s ‘Adoration of the Golden Calf’ stands out among Western European artworks. The Renaissance period is represented by the painting of Italian artist Jacopo Bassano, and the largest section is devoted to the European art of the 17th century. The museum’s exposition of icon painting begins with works of the 16th century and ends with icons of the early 20th century.
