The State Northern Maritime Museum was inaugurated in the 70s of the 20th century. Initially it was under the supervision of USSR Ministry of Merchant Marine but in 1983 it obtained the status of a state institution.
The exposition is located at the building of the former marine passenger terminal not far from the Krasnaya Quay of Arkhangelsk. Its holdings are continuously replenished with new exhibits exemplifying the history of the Russian North exploration. Many rarities and objects of art were received as gifts from the Northern Fleet seamen and members of polar expeditions. The museum workers carry out educational and scientific work and organize permanent and mobile exhibitions.
