Zoogeographic maps show realms of various animal species and provide information on the composition, structure, dynamics, and geographic distribution patterns of biological communities.
The zoogeographic map of Volgograd Region shows the northern and western borders of the realms of such animals as the small jerboa, midday gerbil, yellow ground squirrel, and Eversmann’s hamster. It also provides information on the black lark, European skylark, crane, purple heron, coluber, and long-legged buzzard.
The map is over 4.5 square meters. It also shows the southern and eastern borders of the realms of the moor frog, common European viper, greater blind mole-rat, and Russian desman. In addition, endangered birds, insects and mammals are showed.
The animal world of the Volgograd Region is rich and unique due to its location and climate, as well as contrasting landscapes. According to preliminary estimates more than 15 thousand invertebrate species and about 500 vertebrate species including about 9 thousand species of insects, 8 species of amphibians, 11 species of reptiles, 299 species of birds and 80 species of mammals inhabit the area.
The range of environmental conditions, different biomes from swamps to semi-deserts provide an opportunity for the existence of animals with different types of realms and environmental requirements to the habitat. Among mammals, the rodents are the most diverse and numerous.
In different bioms of the Volgograd Region jackal, wildcat, swamp cat and African wildcat can be seen. Some mammal species inhabit only a part of the region. For example, the Volga is the western border of the realm of the bicolored white-toothed shrew of the shrew family, as well as the yellow ground squirrel. From the south and from the east small groups of saiga antelope, which are on the verge of extinction, sometimes enter the territory of the region.
In the waters of the Don basin there are such valuable fish species as the Don sterlet, sabrefish, vimba, blue bream are found; in the Volga basin — the Russian sturgeon, white sturgeon, sterlet, starred sturgeon, Volga shad, and nelma (beloribitsa). In total, there are about 80 species of fish in the region.
