Moise Kisling, born in Krakow, came to Paris in 1910. He quickly joined the group of young French avant-garde artists and became a notable figure in the School of Paris.  Kisling was a highly sought-after portrait artist. His portrait art was strongly influenced by Amedeo Modigliani. 

The artist’s portraits are full of a special lyrical feeling. His characters, usually depicted against a neutral background, seem to be immersed in their own world. Their eyes are wide open, but a reflective gaze is always turned inward. 

In “The Portrait of Woman”, the artist works with an exquisite color scheme: the contours of the drawing appear as if covered with a light haze, which strengthens the impression of the model’s dreamy meditativeness.
