Moise Kisling was one of the outstanding contributors to the School of Paris. His contemporaries called him the Prince of Montparnasse. This name was the title of a French monograph by Jacques Lambert dedicated to the artist. Moise Kisling quickly joined the group of Montparnasse artists. He worked together with many outstanding people, such as Amedeo Modigliani, Jules Pascin, Pablo Picasso, and Max Jacob.

Due to his unusual Bohemian look with the fringe covering his forehead, his haircut in the style of Joan of Arc, and his everlasting boilersuit, he received the nickname “Eskimo locksmith”.

His best artworks were portraits, but his landscapes are just as interesting, though he did not paint them often. Between 1917-1920, the artist mostly lived in the south of France. The painting “Festival of Flowers in Saint-Tropez” was obviously inspired by his first impressions of the bright colors of this region and the events happening there. The festival of flowers is held on the Cote d’Azur from May until the end of summer. The painting was supposedly made in this period, which was a very happy one for the artist: an upcoming wedding and successful exhibitions that made him famous. The compositional cohesiveness and the decorative colors of this painting saturate the landscape with a feeling of theatricism, which strengthens the festive mood.
