Brown hares are the most common animals in Europe. However, in the Udmurt Republic, there are more polar hares and brown hares are considered to be rare animals. Steppes are the most favorite places of brown hares. They usually live in open treeless areas with small bushes of juniper. Recently, brown hares have been spotted in forest areas, for instance in Zavyalovsk, Saraupolsk, Sharkansk and Votkinsk districts of the Udmurt Republic.

Its appearance differs from polar hares: brown hares have longer ears, tales and hind legs. Brown hares are much darker; it can have black fur on its back. Its fur color depends on the season and life environment. Brown hares turn white in winter and become grey or brown sometimes with reddish tinges in summer. However, the color of its head, ears and upper parts of its back never changes.
In summer brown hares eat wild and cultivated plants as well as young bush shoots. It prefers different vegetables including carrots, pumpkins, zucchinis and eggplants. In winter, brown hares consume seeds, dry grasses, winter wheat and leftovers from garden crops, which they dig from the snow. If snowbanks are too deep hares start eating shoots and tree bark. It prefers eating off maple trees, oaks, nut trees, golden chain trees, apple and pear trees.

Foxes, wolves, bobcats and eagles often hunt hares. That is why it fixes dwellings in hidden places. Hares make day ‘beds’ in tall wild grass, bushes and in wood sides. In winter, it digs deep holes and can stay there for several days in a row. Sometimes hares live in abandoned badger setts and fox holes. It can even settle in fruit and vegetable gardens, as it is not afraid of people. While escaping from predators hares often run into villages and hide in sheds or barns. When summer comes, it inhabits fields and eats seeds and crops.

Brown hares breed twice and sometimes three times a year. Female animals give birth to young hares in holes where they spend their first days. When born they are already able to see and have grey curly fur. At the age of two weeks, they start eating grass and leave their parents.
