Artist Anatoly Lopatko (b. 1957) comes from the town of Maloyaroslavets, Kaluga region. There he graduated from the Kulikov Art School. His creative life is inextricably linked with his native land. He did not receive further systematic education; he considers his teacher the Kaluga watercolor artist and art critic Alexander Subbotin.
Anatoly Lopatko is a participant in numerous regional and Russian exhibitions. He took part in the painting of the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the village of Detchino, created the canvas ‘Wide Maslenitsa on Vasilyevsky Spusk’, participated in the project of the Russian Artists' Union ‘The Art Today’. His works are in the collections of museums in Kaluga, Maloyaroslavets, Borovsk, Tarusa, Moscow, in private collections in Russia and abroad.
The work of Anatoly Lopatko is characterized by originality, the ability to discern beauty and significance in the simplest things and landscapes, and uniquely express them in his painting. For each of his works, he chooses a harmonious color that gives his compositions the impression of completeness. The artist’s painting technique is close to Impressionism, he masterfully captures the moment, fills it with light and a certain meaning. The theme of the Russian province is especially close to him. In his works, one can feel the piercing longing for the past life of small, distinctive towns.
The same feelings are imbued with his painting “The Outgoing Russia” from the collection of the Tarusa Art Gallery. The artist turns to the theme of old abandoned buildings. A dilapidated house is depicted against the background of a gloomy autumn landscape. In the background, the house is crimson, its shade in tune with the autumn foliage of the trees. The masonry of the destroyed building, the overgrown path, the ribbed roof of the new building are represented in the painting. Depicting two such dissimilar objects, the artist seems to contrast the past and the present. The landscape reflects the poetic name of the painting - “The Outgoing Russia”, testifying to an irretrievably gone period.
